Our recent trip to Berlin included the Lange Nacht der Museen. Long museum nights are popular in many cities around Europe (we’ve also been to them in Zurich and Munich). Berlin has two a year, with 100 museums around the city opening their doors from 6pm to 2am. Special events for the evening include concerts, demonstrations, and things like the opportunity to destroy your evil things with a special machine (after first attending the Dinge-Sprechstunde, during which an expert will evaluate your thing for evilness).*

The quick brown fox flies over the lazy Olypiastadion
After more than a year and a half in Munich, we finally made it out to Munich’s Olympiapark. What finally got us there was the flying fox they have up for a few months. We decided to do it together with the Zeltdach-Tour (tent roof tour), which made for a good yet expensive couple of … Read more
Munich: So many bloggers
Whew, what a weekend. We Munich bloggers had the honor of hosting this year’s Whiny Expat Blogger Meet-Up. Bloggers from the far corners of Germany descended upon us for a weekend of eating, drinking, wandering around, and lots and lots of conversation. We tried to give everyone a glimpse of our city with some unexpected … Read more
Berlin: as enchanting as ever
After almost three whole months (oh, the horror) of sleeping in my own bed, I finally got out of Munich for a few days in Berlin. Berlin is one of the few places I go back to over and over and over again, because I will never get enough of it. It’s so big and … Read more
A short guide to Munich’s public transportation system
[Note: if you’re not planning on using Munich’s public transportation system anytime soon, I recommend skipping this post. Instead go look at some funny t-shirts from Gatlinburg.] Even Germans are bewildered when they first encounter Munich’s public transportation system in all its glory. The various zones, trams, S-bahns, rings, U-bahns, and Streifenkarten are enough to … Read more
Ask the Expat: practical Oktoberfest advice for first-time visitors
Can you post some guidance for Oktoberfest ahead of the event this year for those of us who want to attend? (At least I no longer think it’s in Oktober 🙂 ) -Dave Hampton, Random Walks in the Low Countries OK, so my last post containing Oktoberfest tips was not particularly comprehensive. This time I … Read more
Expat bloggers to descend on Munich. Wanna come?
I keep forgetting to post about this, but the event is fast approaching. On the weekend of September 4th – 6th, expat bloggers from all around Germany will be coming to Munich to hang out, chat, drink, eat, walk around, and chat some more. I am all kinds of excited to get to see some … Read more
Scenes from Munich: little old lady fight
The other day I was walking home when I stopped at a crosswalk to wait for the light to change. Also waiting was a little old German lady. Not waiting was a small group of German teenage boys, who were wantonly crossing the street without proper permission from the little green man. The little old … Read more
Air Berlin: a bafflingly good airline
I’ve flown Air Berlin several times now, and I have to admit the airline confuses me. Its prices are often excellent, especially if you book during a sale (offerings such as 2-for-1 tickets can often be found on their website). The website is functional, allowing smooth and easy purchases and online check-in. On board, passengers … Read more
Notes from a wet Munich summer
Summer in Munich has gotten off to a rather rainy start. Some people are complaining about this. Not me! Luckily our balcony garden doesn’t seem to mind the rain. We’ve been enjoying a steady stream of fresh strawberries, peas, and zucchini flowers. Yum. This weekend 18,000 orange-shirt-clad people ran through the city in the Munich … Read more
