I have a mountain of blog posts in the works that will be coming up soon now that we’re all recovered from Oktoberfest and our month of visitors. Life in Munich is back to normal, still with plenty going on (Auer Dult, for example) but fewer drunk people in lederhosen.
Last night was the Lange Nacht der Museen, when all kinds of museums and galleries offer special programming and stay open until 2am. This year’s event had two highlights for me, both distinctly German.
Highlight #1: The Potato Museum
I’m not even sure I was aware that Munich had a potato museum, but there it was, tucked subtly behind the Ostbahnhof. The exhibit included potato-themed artwork, potato history, and potato trivia. Special for the museum night they had several potato products out for us to try, including potato bread, potato jam, and these crispy little things called “chips.” I tell you, it’s downright amazing what can be made out of potatoes these days.
Highlight #2: learning that the Sprockets theme is actually a Kraftwerk song
Despite having spent almost seven years of my life in Germany, my exposure to Kraftwerk has been rather limited. As part of this year’s museum night we decided to remedy that by checking out the 3D Kraftwerk exhibit at Kunstbau. The whole experience felt like a parody of what a 3D Kraftwerk exhibit might entail.
Today I haven’t been able to stop dancing like this:
i had forgotten about the sprocket dance – thanks for the reminder.
looking forward to the blog posts re oktoberfest to reinforce reasons not to go to Germany during the celebrations….
Awesome! I’m so glad someone finally posted a Dieter skit. I forgot it was called Sprockets and have never successfully hunted it down on You tube. Thank you so much! Finally, my German friends will understand my jokes….
i also visited the kraftwerk exhibition and it was really fantastic! did you take more photos there? i lost all my photos with my smartphone…:(
