I recently visited Leipzig for the first time in more than 10 years. Back then the city was a mishmosh of decrepit old buildings, hideously ugly GDR-era new buildings, and a lot of construction.
I was most curious to see how it looked today.
I found a vibrant, beautiful city full of stunning architecture, welcoming people, and so much creativity. There are murals everywhere, filling in gaps in the city architecture or spicing up some otherwise very dull buildings.
Subjects range from lighthearted snippets of daily life to moving reminders of Leipzig’s political past (the people of Leipzig were instrumental in the movement which led to the fall of the Berlin Wall).
Many of these murals were found along Arthur-Hoffmann-Straße, to the south of the city center.
More about my trip to Leipzig coming up soon.
Looks great. Also (obviously) reminds me of Berlin’s Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg.
I adore the clothesline! Very inspiring.
the first drawing is a modern version of a famous drawing by M. C. Escher, compare here: http://tb.akbild.ac.at/blog/archive/2008/04/03/thomas_hesse1.jpg

@Ira – I agree, many similarities between Leipzig and parts of Berlin. Both cities I love!
@Lara – It’s one of my favorites, too.
