This growing-food-on-the-balcony thing is cool! Plus, I get to feel all smug and self-satisfied for reducing my food miles to, well, a couple meters. We are rolling in zucchini and zucchini flowers, and have feasted on strawberries and lettuce and peas and a couple bell peppers thus far. There are about a gazillion tomatoes on the plants, but none of them have started to turn red yet. Let’s hope they don’t all decide to ripen on exactly the same day.
Our balcony looks like a waist-high jungle these days, with hardly any room for a person to go through and water and pick. I keep wanting to buy more plants, but obviously that’s not going to work, so I’m just adding to my mental list of what I want to grow next year (cucumbers, definitely, and more peas!).
As much as I love our balcony garden, it’s not all fun and games… it’s also a lot of responsibility! These plants need water every single day. Which means someone has to be here every single day. It’s ridiculous. Even a cat can survive a few days on its own. Plants are so demanding.

looking good! all grown on a balcony!
Thanks. 🙂 Yep, it’s amazing how much food can come from a tiny little balcony…
This is so cool. I hope I can grow my own garden in DK.
My mom used to grow tomatoes and cucumbers in our yard.
Bluefish – my parents had a garden when I was little, too. I have fond memories of it.
I hope you get to grow your own, too! Despite the every-day-water thing, it’s actually not much work. 🙂
Wow! I’m impressed. Watering everyday is a serious commitment.
I wanted a balcony garden this summer, but I’ve been traveling too much.
I know, it doesn’t go well with my travel schedule at all! But I do actually tend to travel less in the summer, so it’s not as bad as it could be.
Your vegetables look awesome.
You have every right to feel smug and self satisfied! I’ve always wanted to grow tomatoes…leider kein Balkon.
Thanks, SM! Too bad about the lack of balcony… can you put window boxes out? I’ve seen a bunch of tomato plants around that are small enough for a window box.
