8. The smell of the air – seriously, doesn’t fall smell good?
7. Glühwein has started to show up everywhere (you will be hearing a lot about this stuff in the coming months).
6. Beautiful leaves
5. Break out your fondue pot and raclette grill – it’s open season on melted cheese!
4. Roasted chestnuts – available on nearly every corner downtown, not to mention fresh from my oven several days a week.
3. Fall menus at local restaurants
2. Zimtsterne have finally made their appearance at Coop! (Migros’s aren’t nearly as good.)
1. And the number one reason to love fall in Zurich…. It means that winter is just around the corner! What could be better than that?
[PS – I wrote this post because I was beginning to fear that you might forget where I actually live.]
I agree with you on the Zimtsternen- yummy bag in my cupboard right now- but the chestnuts? Just yuck.
MMmm.. cheese and cookies! It seems like the Swiss are all business this time of year with making everything look perfectly cozy for the fall and winter.
yummm and chocolate too! sounds fabulous, too bad, I dont feel like driving over there or I would just to try those cookies!
mmm, my mother in law makes a mean Zimtsterne!
I’m very curious to knowhow you roast those chestnuts in the oven…
I’d give that a try here…
Great pic by the way. And you think Zurich is blan… move to canada!
Hi Expat – here’s my super-exclusive roasted chestnut recipe: heat over to around 250 c, wash chestnuts and slice open shells on one side in a cross shape (I find kitchen shears the best for this, once you figure out what you’re doing), spread chestnuts on a cookie sheet and drizzle a little water on them, then roast until they’re done (usually around 20 minutes I think – I don’t time them, just take one out to try every once in a while). Mmmmmmm…. roasted chestnuts… don’t burn your fingers!
